I’m surprised there isn’t a thread for this yet. The 18-year old Disney channel actor-turned singer is perhaps the most talked-about person in music right now. Her debut album, Sour, debuted atop the billboard 200 this week. Last week, the third single off her album, Good 4 U, debuted atop the billboard hot 100 and was the first pop-punk song to occupy that spot since the 2000s. Good 4 U also broke the Spotify record for most streams of a song in a single week, previously held by her first single, Drivers License, which went viral earlier this year and spent 8 consecutive weeks atop the billboard hot 100. Rodrigo credits Lorde, Taylor Swift, and Paramore, among other artists, as her influences.

I’m personally indifferent to her music, although I think she represents a really interesting culmination of trends we’ve seen in pop music over the past two decades.

Trash. All the songs on her album are about the exact same thing, except for like two (not coincidentally they are also the best two, brutal and jealousy jealousy).

Also her voice annoys me to death, most notably the “like a damn sociopath” line in good 4 u, that just sounds awful. But pretty much any time she sings softly, I don’t like that either. Overrated songwriting too. It’s not bad but when people compare her to Taylor Swift it’s just like  Roll Eyes

And her “influences” often seem like more than just that. So yeah, I don’t like this girl at all

I still think it's hilarious that she first became prominent by starring on a Disney Channel show with Jake Paul, of all people.

I only know her from "Drivers License" and I don't get why it became such a phenomenon. It's the most boring, depressing, miserable top 40 song I have heard in awhile.

I don't want to call her a horrible person though, she seems sweet and innocent enough. I just don't see what distinguishes her from other teenie-bopper singers that got their start on kids' television networks and think their sad music is somehow poignant.

Probably a decent enough person, but gosh her music is awful. And I think you can make that style of song in a much better way.

Awesome, I loved her album. I think any person voting HP is pretty sick to be calling an 18 year old girl a horrible person for -checks notes- making music they don't like?

this is definitely one hazard of using an FF/HP frame for literally everything.

Uh this is not pop-punk, LOL. This is like the Disney Channel's version of pop-punk.

This is what pop-punk is:

Anyway I didn't vote. Her music obviously isn't my thing buy that's not grounds to label her a Horrible Person (even in the forum sense that doesn't mean a literal horrible person.)
