Either independently or in a primary - and if so, who?

Three ran in 2020.

Three? Schultz didn't file.

So you have Trump (supposedly) and Bloomberg. Who else?

Probably not

Bloomberg only ran because he thought Sanders was going to beat Biden and he didn't want a "communist" to win

Otherwise, most are smart enough to know that a billionaire isn't going to win the Democratic Primary

The idiot Tom Steyer.

Doubt it. I could see Mark Cuban flirting more heavily this time than he did last time but he ultimately won't.

I remember he was thinking about a third-party run but ended up endorsing Biden.

At that level of wealth you think you can do anything. So of course at least one will run.

Most billionaires don't get obscene amounts of cosmetic surgery. Why would they? Their money speaks for itself. That's why I think Larry Ellison might be vain enough to not only run - but think he has a shot at winning, as well.

Bill Gates should run to trigger the conspiracy theorists.

I'm sure some will try, but the only billionaire who doesn't have an image of being an out of touch old fogey who has any appeal to young people is Elon Musk, and he was born in South Africa, so he couldn't run even if he wanted to. I'm not sure if Kanye West is a billionaire, but if he is by 2024 he might give it another go.

The only other serious potential candidates have major flaws:
  • Bloomberg is too old and pissed a lot of people when he tried running in the Dem primaries.
  • Gates has serious controversy around him, especially in recent months and running for president would only make him an even bigger lightning rod.
  • As far as I know, Oprah Winfrey said she did not want to run, and her running has always been nothing more than a pipe dream among soccer moms. She's past her prime as a celebrity and it would be too easy to call her campaign a Hail Mary to become relevant again.
  • Howard Shultz is a literal who to 99% of people who don't obsessively follow elections years before they happen.

I think of any eligible billionaire did try running everyone would accuse them of "buying their way into the race", as was often repeated in 2020, or some controversy around them would become more well-known, ending their campaign.

Who knows, either Musk could argue that the Constitution doesn't prevent non-natural born citizens from simply running for president, and he could run a sort of protest campaign against the two-party system, but this is hilariously outlandish. Unless some billionaire can capture people's attention and exploit their frustration with the two-party system, I doubt any will even try.

Rick Scott definitely. He was already planning on challenging Hillary in 2020 so Trump deferred his run to 2024. He has a very checkered past, as the health care company he started got caught defrauding Medicare of billions of dollars.

No mention of Mark Cuban? He seems one of the most likely to run to me. And no, Trump does not count as he is not a billionaire.

Is Rick Scott a billionaire? I thought he was more in the Mitt Romney multi millionaire range.

Doubtful. I think he wouldn't be good campaigner, but a fine president.

Rick Scott, Mitt Romney, and Mark Warner are all centimillionaires, not billionaires. They, along with Mike Braun, are the richest members of the Senate.

Jim Justice could always throw his hat in the ring.

Also, it was actually 4 billionaires who ran in 2020: Kanye is worth $6.6B.

I'm going to guess yes, with the caveat that's it's most likely to be some random, Steyer-like billionaire most of us have never heard of.

"Definitely" feels like a stretch, but after Trump was actually elected and Bloomberg and Steyer both pulled off fairly credible 2020 campaigns I'd have to say I expect some to. Voted "probably", but closer to "definitely" than "maybe".

It's a stretch to call Trump a billionaire and to call Steyer's campaign credible.
