Gotta go with Clinton. By 1808 he was no longer a young man (he would ultimately die mere months before the next election) and a bit like a stale biscuit after failed bids for (vice) president in 1788, 1792, and 1796, but still far preferable to Madison — who was temperamentally ill-suited for the presidency — and Monroe — who ran as the candidate of the conservative Tertium Quids increasingly aligned with the worst elements in the Federal party.
