The very epitome of an HP. Insane that he has a net FF rating from Democrats because he had a quarrel with Trump.

This.

The truth is, McCain-Feingold and Obamacare were exceptions, not the norm. The rest was largely centre-right moderate heroism for the sake of it...and then he lost to Obama and really veered off the map.

Mean spirited and  broken clocked as it may have been, but Trump was pretty much correct. But Trump's comparatively more pacifistic stance isn't exactly popular here with all these do-gooder internationalist hawks that probably would've stanned for 'Nam in the 60's.

Mild FF

I did not like his foreign policy. He would have America all over the world in his militaristic adventures like Rumsfeld, Kristol, etc

America is war weary, has been since 2007

FF. I get the "being a bomber pilot doesn't make you a hero" take (though I don't agree with it), but let's not forget the man couldn't lift his arms above his head because he was so brutally beat and poorly treated, and in the face of it all refused a release designed to curry favor with the US government (since he was an Admiral's son).

He's been more in the news lately surrounding Trump.

I think he was a massive freedom fighter. I didn't agree with him on several issues, but honor the sacrifice he has made for his country, especially in Vietnam. I also liked his maverick persona, going against the party line when he felt a need to. He also had reasonable positions on immigration and campaign finance laws. He also deserves credit for civility.
I agree. John McCain would have made a pretty decent President in 2000 and IMO is one of the greatest Senators who ever served.

I hate the g**ks. I will hate them as long as I live.

Quote from: John McCain, 2000
I would arm, train, equip, both from without and from within, forces that would eventually overthrow the governments and install free and democratically- elected governments.

He made one correct vote at the end of his career.
That does not redeem him for decades of horrible positions and votes. HP, easily.

Massive HP, Moderate Democrats desperately cling to this false narrative around him as an example of the "what the Republicans were before Trump came in and totally changed everything."

The Republican Party hurts people, and he never came close to being an exception.

I followed his career for years, I believe he was the real deal though he disappointed at times.  Too hawkish, though not exceptionally so by DC standards.  If some of his maverick positions were driven by his personal emotional life, that is at least no worse than being driven by the winds of partisanship.

A true American hero and a fantastic role model for any American politician.

Unfortunately his implosion as a presidential candidate (brought on partially by his choice of Sarah Palin as VP) paved the way for Obamacare.

HP.  Never linked him.  Totally on the opposite of him on foreign policy for decades.   Was convinced by my DW to vote for him in 2008 mostly because of her clear disdain for Obama.  While I totally share my DW vitriolic hatred of Obama, I actually felt ill voting for him.

On balance, FF. Like others have said, his foreign policies leaned too heavily on the hawkish side, and for that alone, it's probably for the best that his presidential candidacies in 2000 and 2008 failed. Moreover, McCain's selection of Sarah Palin as his running mate in 2008 was a flawed move, on his part, and certainly contributed to his loss against former President Obama. I'm also aware of what has been said regarding his first marriage, divorce, and subsequent marriage to Cindy McCain.

But on the other hand, McCain endured years of captivity at the hands of the North Vietnamese; prisoners of war and military veterans, in my view, deserve the absolute respect, and it doesn't matter whether the Vietnam War was justified, or whatever else you have to say about it. To his credit, he ran a clean campaign and avoided racist or dogwhistling attacks against Obama-in fact, as some would recall, he politely rebutted the "concerns" of one such woman at one of the debates.

He was greatly respected by his colleagues on both sides of the aisle, and I think his maverick reputation was genuine, as can be seen by his efforts on campaign reform and later, his vote against the Obamacare repeal package. One can also see this by the solid mandates that Arizona's voters gave him in election after election-in 1998 and 2004 in particular, he received huge levels of crossover support from Democrats. And finally, McCain had a clear and firm respect for this country's institutions-a respect which Donald Trump sorely lacks. So on balance, I'd say that the positives outweigh the negatives.

BIG HP.

Not because of mere policy differences, he was just a nasty, mean spirited and arrogant person.  He only became venerated because he opposed/undermined Trump several times.

bUt HoW cAn YoU sPeAk iLl oF tEh DeD?!?11

This is a guy who:

-Called his wife a C**t in front of reporters,
-Ditched his first wife after a crippling auto accident,
-Dis-invited Sarah Palin from his own funeral, despite never saying a bad word towards him and even defending him against a primary AZ challenger
-Refused to resign despite remaining too ill to serve his constituents, denying them of representation for well over a year.
-Has a legendary raging temper.
-Falsely smeared Kelli Ward as a conspiratard

And that's before getting into his poor political decisions in the senate, but that's irrelevant 2 years on...
