Our King T'chenka has broadened his horizons tremendously since joining Atlas.  This is where he's come to learn about Mohammed Amin Al-Husseini, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem of the 1930s and WWII years, a founding father of Pan-Arab Nationalism and a proven Nazi Collaborator.  It's also where he came to learn about John Tyler, 10th President of the United States, whose accomplishment was establishing that the VP is actually the President.  Tyler is also the only US President who served in the Confederate Government; he was a member of the Confederate Congress from 1861 until his death in 1862.

So who do you condemn?  The Grand Mufti or John Tyler?

John Tyler, because of the fact that he betrayed his country and sought its destruction even after he was president. Husseini was a major dick and made some majorly derogatory remarks about Jews, even going so far as to align himself with the piece de resistance of antisemitism, but he didn’t out and out betray his own countrymen.

I condemn both as both are terrible, and I'm not picking which was worse, given both were terrible. Didn't vote in the poll as the poll deceptively paints this as an "either-or" choice, when it really isn't, and it isn't a stretch to say that both are horrible.

I like John Tyler so I voted for him. The ahistorical purges are so hypocritical. The Young Turks are named after genocidal monsters and yet they demand the Redskins change their "offensive" name. Good to know I dont have to worry about the cancellation demands from at least one forum member now, if he's going to be named after an antisemitic Nazi collaborator.

Why not both?

What "ahistorical purges"? A "purge" would be if someone tried to wipe out Tyler and his presidency from history, as if he never existed. It's vastly diffrent from stating that he was a literal traitor to his country (among other things), and as thus does not deserve commemoration. No one is "changing" history, if anything we're admitting the historical truth.

"four speakers who served the Confederacy," so, in other words, not just any random Speaker, but Speakers who endorsed the radical pro-slavery fire-eater views of the Deep South, and wanted to break apart the union for the sole purpose of protecting the inhumane practice of slavery. I would say that such people do not deserve to be honored in our Capitol, and as a symbolic gesture, the Congress should strip them of their titles, as they've shown that they are unworthy of such titles (Cochrane).

Stripping dead people of their titles is actually kind of a dumb thing. For example how would stripping a dead President of his title even work? Declaring that, in case of Tyler, the office was vacant from 1841 to 1845? Or declaring that the next person in the line of succession at that time should be recognized as the 10th President? Now, that would be actual erasing history, and there's really no legal mechanism. What would they do, impeach him post-mortem?

There's a huge difference between not commemorating an undeserving historical figure, and this stupidity.

There was a guy named "John Tyler" on a now-defunct forum I used to admin for called the Movie Watcher's Oasis. He told us for years that he was 35 years old, owned a Foot Locker, and lived in Enid, Oklahoma. Eventually it turned out that he was actually just a morbidly obese teenager from upstate New York who would literally pirate five or six movies a day and watch them while eating cheesy puffs.

He made a fake account for his "wife," Kate Tyler, whose grammar and syntax were somehow almost identical to his. After a while people just started calling him on his crap and he broke down and confessed. It was actually kinda sad.

I have a lot of fun Oasis stories. It was my Atlas-before-Atlas.

I had to do a double-take to confirm that fuzzy had actually posted this in earnest rather than another poster doing so ironically.
