TIL there are progressive Christians who evangelize.  I never meet them in real life though.
You seriously just heard of that today?

I mean all Christian groups evangelize (outside of the Amish I suppose.)

Most progressive Christians I meet IRL or interact with on the internet seem more concerned with criticizing conservative Christianity than responding to atheists, Muslims, Mormons, etc.  You are an exception.
So what about that except for a few extreme outliers like the Amish all churches have outreach programs and seek new members?

Difference between evangelizing and evangelizing. The latter is too tacky for most of the mainline.

Why are there ELCA churches in Minnesota that have Spanish language services and one that's more than 40% African refugees? Is Minnesota just a magnet for immigration of the massive populations of Lutherans in Latin America and Africa?

A relationship based on that is as doomed as the Hindenburg.

I think the local progressive churches did hand out materials to students during my freshman orientation in college.  I had honestly forgotten about that.  I was never once invited to one of those churches (and I knew several people who attended).  The Southern Baptists as well as the Conservative Presbyterians actively invited people to their churches.

why does BRTD's religiosity bother people so much? I don't understand.

It's because people see it as a category error. We're used to thoroughgoing progressive Christians who are easygoing or lackadaisical about some aspects of Christian orthodoxy, and we're used to Christians who are left-wing but have a few religiously-motivated less-progressive views (like me or Scott). BRTD is unusual in being "all liberal all the time" on the one hand, but on the other an extremely fervent small-o orthodox Christian who, as we're seeing in this thread, is happy to entertain aspects of Evangelical culture that even much more politically conservative Christians don't usually go in for.

I hope the missionary daters enjoy it while it lasts, because they'll be lucky to have missionary left after marriage.

Is there anyone here actually surprised that some LGBT Christians are pretty hardcore and zealous and aren't the types who just attend a mainline church from time to time? Maybe my social circles make it way more common to meet such people but I've also heard of many "in the wild" too (see my anecdote about my former supervisor above...) and hence people like me although straight don't strike me as odd either.

I can obviously only speak for myself, but why in the world would I of all people be surprised by that?

I don't think anything could surprise me about the behavior of Christians at this point.

Well I think it fits into your post summarizing why people are offput by me or very surprised the described practice exists. I'm straight but it's still kind of the same principle.

To be clear about my own stance, I disagree with you on missionary dating, but I'm not SHOCKED, SHOCKED that you have a position on it I find unpleasant.

I believe the LGBTs should only do missionary dating, for the purposes of procreation.
