Gerald Rudolph Ford.

I would have voted for Ford and Democratic down-ballot. Ford has done a good job since taking office, as he restored honor to the presidency, the economy was actually recovering, he kept spending somewhat under control and conducted a good foreign policy. He was definitely more prepared to be president. I think he deserved to get an own mandate, which is why I would have supported him. So my vote would have been more pro-Ford than anti-Carter. If I was a US voter in 1976, I may have launched a local "Democrats for Ford" campaign.

I said Ford. Carter was a semi-segregationist just 6 years earlier while Ford had been pushing for civil rights for a while.

Tough call. Lean Ford, but could go Carter. Now if it were Carter vs. Reagan in 1976 without hindsight, Carter easily with and without.

Carter, but in 1980, Teddy Kennedy would have defeated Reagan
