None of the three are remotely qualified. Omar would be best of them, but it's a very low bar.

Hillary Clinton was probably the best in modern times.

I'm not sure who I would pick now, but none of the names polled.

Other: James Stavridis or Tim Kaine.

What does Alexandria qualify for the job? Not much more than what qualifies Betsy deVos to be Seretary of Education.

Absolutely none of the above.

On the other hand, at least they would probably do a better job than Hillary.

Between the Libya bombing campaign and the American role in the Arab Spring, I wholeheartedly disagree.

Literally none of them. One is a congressional candidate and the other two are state representatives. Not even remotely qualified.

My ideal Secretary of State is Samantha Power.

For the heck of it, I set up my own 2020 cabinet. Secretary of State is a pretty close fight between:

  • Sandy Vershbow
  • Zalmay Khalilzad
  • John Negroponte

Vershbow appears to top the list because he isn't too old, has an impressive amount of experience in both Republican and Democratic administrations, is a noted Putin opponent, and has high repute among NATO allies. His service has been nothing if not exemplary of an American statesman, and I think Congress would agree enough to give him a solid confirmation.

Khalilzad runs a close second. Ideologically, we're very close. His qualifications are excellent for the office, but what's holding him to number two on the list is my administration's likely shift in focus to European and Asian affairs rather than Khalilzad's areas of experience, Iraq and Afghanistan. Ideally, he would serve as either Deputy SecState or Assistant SecState for Near Eastern Affairs.

Negroponte would probably be a close number two if not for his age. At 82 years old in 2021, he likely wouldn't have the stamina to take a high-pressure job like SecState. Regardless of whether he got the office or not, Negroponte would, nine times out of ten, have a place in my administration as an adviser.

Ilhan Omar or AOC b/c they both majored in international studies & that's the extent of their qualifications...

To be absolutely clear, though, my ideal Secretary of State is Joe Biden or, if Biden's President, a John Kerry comeback.
