well, now it's gang of 12?  I wonder if they'll re-group to still be 14.  I can't say I've a positive opinion of them-despite being a mix of liberal and conservative, non of them are libertarian.

Guess. Smiley

Whether or not I agree with the reason for their deal (I did, but that's not the point), the main thing I admired was the simple bid for compromise during a period of bitter and heated partisanship.  Mike DeWine's part in that group was one reason why I voted for him last month.

I'd like to see the police crack down more on these types of gangs.

The only new Senators I can think of who might join would be Bob Casey, and maybe Jim Webb. All of the other newly elected Democratic Senators are pretty liberal, and Bob Corker I don't see joining. So I guess they could get back to 14, but this time it would be 9 Dems and 5 Republicans.

I didn't say that all Democrats elected were liberals. I said that besides Bob Casey and Jim Webb, all of the newly-elected Democratic Senators are liberal.

Brown, Whitehouse, Tester, Cardin, Klobuchar, McCaskill, Menendez, and Sanders (if you count him) - all can be classified as liberals to a varying degree.

Menendez voted for torture and banning flag "desecration."

McCaskill stated her support for banning flag "desecration."

Sanders voted to ban online gambling in the House of Representatives.

Whitehouse supports the federal death penalty, while Chafee didn't.

What's your point?

I hope you don't honestly believe that there is a case to be made that people like Sanders and Whitehouse are not liberals b/c they each broke with the liberal position on one vote. If you seriously do, then you have a very, very narrow and wrong idea of what it means to be a liberal.

I'm not saying that they aren't liberals.  I'm just saying not to be surprised or disappointed when they break from the liberal establishment on important issues we didn't forsee they would do so on, especially when Jeffords and Chafee wouldn't have.

Don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled that Whitehouse and Sanders are liberals.  Every new vote against Iraq, against the PATRIOT Act, etc. is worth having in the Senate.
