Progressive Dems can win in states like Virginia, Florida, and maybe North Carolina.

Define progressive. Someone socially conservative/fiscally liberal could make a run in the right circumstances, whom I'd consider a progressive and would also in some ways be considered a blue dog.

With that said, do people like JBE, Peresly, and Hood support stuff like 15 min wage, free college, medicare for all, paid family leave?

Doug Jones isn't a progressive. He is Generic Democrat.

They really need another Ralph Yarborough. It's amazing that someone from a Jim Crow state voted for every civil rights bill.

Kefauver didn't live long enough for '64.

Also, this. a socially conservative/fiscally progressive candidate would do very well in the south.

Were they ever alive to begin with?

I can think of Huey Long and Al Gore, but I can't name any other progressive politician in the South's entire history.

Al Gore, Sr, and Estes Kefauver, Democratic Senators from Tennessee, refused to sign the Southern Manifesto and voted for Civil Rights Legislation.

Lister Hill and John Sparkman, Democratic Senators from Alabama, were economic liberals  and populists, until Hill almost got beat by a Repuclican in 1962.  After that, all of Alabama's Congressional delegation veered right on their overall voting records.

Rep. Wright Patman (D-TX) was an economic populist eulogized by Ralph Nader.

Sen. J William Fulbright (D-AR) was one of the leading anti-war votes in the Senate.

Big Jim Folsom had his moments, the area around Huntsville, AL was full of earnest New Dealers, Frank Yarborough in TX, others.

Charlie Wilson was another liberal southern rep from TX. He won by sticking with the God and guns routine tho but pretty left on other issues. See Charlie Wilson's War for ref.

Terry Sanford and Kefauver spring to mind too.

Not at all. They still are around, however they don't manage to win much. However as more and more liberal populations move down here from the NE and other left-wing hotspots, they will be able to win, and win often.
