The Almanac of American Politics notes that younger voters backed Gantt and older voters Helms-- and that that was a reversal of age/party patterns across most of the country.

For example, in the 1990 MI governor's race, voters under 40 supported John Engler (R) while those 40 and older supported Gov. Jim Blanchard (D).

“I am going to sincerely miss you, Jesse. And we are going to miss your courtly manners. We are going to miss the fact that whenever there is a crunch, one of the first guys to step up to offer help is Jesse Helms….I have no doubt you will still be there for the rest of us. We need you.” - Joe Biden

“I have admired his dedication to his views, though I may strongly disagree with them, and his commitment to his constituents in North Carolina. There were certainly several occasions when I wished I had Senator Helms fighting on my side. When the battle was done, there were no hard feelings….You would be hard pressed to find a nicer man in the U.S. Senate.” - Dianne Feinstein

Braun's reply to Helms was, “Senator Helms, your singing would make me cry if you sang ‘Rock of Ages.’” They both laughed, along with Orrin Hatch, who was also in the elevator. It was not a mean-spirited exchange.

"I'm going to make her cry" seems pretty mean-spirited on Helms' end. It's just that Braun decided to not get mad at a racist jerk.

Age patterns really varied by state in the 1990s. You can really see that if you look at the 1996 exit polls, which do not in most cases correctly predict future trends whatsoever.

I also recall reading Paul Wellstone's strongest margins were from the 18-25 bracket in 1990.
