Examples include Narrate, Bloom, The Story, Radius, Substance, The River, The Movement, Reality, Bread, Epic, Radiance, Seed, The Bridge and The Quest.

Love this new trend. The fact that so many of them actually sound like night club or music venue names makes it even better.

No. A church's name should give you some sense of what to expect, in terms of its theology. This is just needlessly "edgy".

Honestly, those names kind of do. They're usually emergent or at least sympathetic to the movement.

The new normal.  Especially for people coming back to church after years away.  Those people are typically turned off by the politics and social implications that can come with a denomination.

I wouldn't go to one without insisting on reading its Yelp reviews first.

If I'm going for moralistic therapeutic deism, it had better be four stars or better.

Have you ever been to one of these churches?  They're very far from deism, morally or otherwise.

There are only three proper church name forms: “Saint ___________”; “Our Lady of ___________”; and “Divine ___________”. Proper churches with other names (“National Sheine of the Little Flower”) are generally anomalies.

EDIT: I’m so happy Averroes is back.

Yes. Not that kind of deism. How would you describe them?

I've found that they're typically evangelical, so pretty far from that branch of deism.  I'll be honest I hadn't heard of it before, but after reading up on it, it seems that there's a main focus on being a good person, instead of a relationship with God.  That's pretty different from most evangelical churches.

Most certainly not "moralistic therapeutic deism", that's more along the lines of a lot of the theologically liberal mainline churches.

These type of churches tend to put a lot of emphasis on the "It's not about religion but a relationship with Jesus Christ" sort of thinking, but as noted above also on being a good person and are often pretty progressive. But one very noted point is they also tend to be quite small "o" orthodox theologically.

And their social media presence is more likely to be based on YouTube and Instagram than Yelp.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't understand how "small 'o' orthodoxy"and claims like "it's not a religion, it's a relationship with Jesus Christ" can go together.

I'm referring to the fact they tend to be pretty firm on things like believing in the Trinity, the Virgin Birth, the Biblical account of Jesus' miracles, the Resurrection, etc. Basically no denial of the Nicene Creed. Lots of mainline churches like to cast this stuff aside and argue a lot of it is merely metaphorical or whatever. They basically promote religion without the miracles of Jesus.

BTW my least favorite of these is the theory that Jesus didn't die but merely passed out on the cross and the Resurrection was merely Him waking up

There is also "Unity" with which some famous celebrities identify.
One good example of progressive Christianity.
