Of the groundbreaking Sid Meier's Civilization series, which generation of game is the best? I left out spinoffs such as Beyond Earth and the two Colonizations.

You can judge them based off of purely base game, or with expansions.

I've played all of them except the first, and I'm gonna rank them:

1. IV
2. V
3. III
4. II
5. VI

IV's the best, most easily playable, fun, dynamic, moddable.

V is the best aesthetically, pretty good gameplay and moddability.

III is, for some reason, difficult for me to play, but still interesting. Plus, the leaderheads change with every era.

I just don't remember II all that well, but it was pretty fun to play + those advisors.

I did not like VI at all so I refunded it on steam.

I've only played IV and V, and I thought the standalone version of IV was more fun to play than V, although I will say V was made much better by the Brave New World expansion with the World Congress stuff and being able to create trade routes.

I haven't played VI cause I don't really have time for long ass simulation games anymore, but I've heard the AI messes up all the war parts of the game, which kinda takes out a lot of the fun.

The recent expansions have improved on that quite a bit.

Civ IV

(though Civ II, and their Advisors Council, City View, and Wonder movies, will always hold a special place in my heart)

Come on, who didn't love these guys, especially when your country was having a revolution/anarchy?

I've played all of them except for the first and sixth.
My ranking would be:
IV
V
III
II (this one being way behind the other three)

I'm playing a game of Civ 4 (Caveman2Cosmos mod) right now.  Polynesia is kicking Assyrian ass.

I've only played 4-6, which I would rank in numerically ascending order from best to worst.

True enough, the Advisors Council was great
