I wonder who the forcibly conscripted immigrants would pick? Or the people who had their constitutional rights revoked?

Hahahaha. Only 5% of the Union Army was drafted, and the Confederates were the first to implement the draft, months before the Union did. Plus, the constitutional liberties of Confederate citizens were basically zero. Internal passports, crackdown on free speech, and the massacre of Unionists in the non-border states led to a basic tyranny of the majority in the South. Not to mention slavery.

Anyway, these were the best two Presidents of the United States. I give Lincoln a slight edge because ending slavery was huge.

Yes the poor Irish, German and Belgian immigrants, many of whom couldn't speak English, who walked off of boats in New York and Boston and were drafted or "volunteered" without knowing what would go on would agree with you.

We aren't discussing the merits of the presidency of Jefferson Davis. Just because the confederacy was cracking down on rights, doesn't make it okay for Lincoln to do the same.

When someone gives you a gun and uniform and asks you to sign your name, you don't need to know English to know that's volunteering for military service. I didn't say I agreed with the draft. If anything it made the Union Army worse with indecisive elements that didn't want to fight. This is a fantasy that you concocted in your head. If anything they had a much freer life than they would have had in Ireland, for God's sake.

Thousands of people were tricked or forced into a war they knew nothing about and you're just fine with it?
As for the freer life, sure the ones that lived. You're glossing over a pretty serious and egregious thing our government did. So if trump rounded up immigrants handed them guns and dropped them in North Korea that would be fine with you?

Can I safely assume based on this statement, that you are not among those who argue that slavery was good for blacks because it brought them to the western hemisphere?

German immigrants were great soldiers and notable in battle, and many of them willingly joined.

For immigrants, the army is a safe bet.

I mean, technically in the aftermath the German beer industry was hardest hit, but I'll let it slide.
