For with hindsight, any option but Hindenburg is reasonable because it would almost definitely lead to a royalist and military coup, probably with the hesitant support of liberals, republicans, democrats, and either socialists or conservatives depending on who won.

I'd have to say Hindenburg, even if the man was a roadblock to both democracy and a restoration of the monarchy.

A lot will depend on the chancellor as Hindenburg was at point determined to get rid of Bruning, but I'd even prefer Von Papen to the Nazis and the Communists.

Without hindsight, Hindenburg, in a tactical anti-Hitler vote

With hindsight, Thalmann, as the lesat obnoxious.

Hindenburg, and spoilt ballot in retrospect. I could have been persuaded to vote for a relatively decent communist, but Thalmann was a crap.

Thälmann was as much part of the problem as Hindenburg.

Literally no one wanted both of those things at the time.

No, that's not what would have happened.

Spoilt ballot both with and without hindsight, Thälmann was horrific though I suppose I might conceivably have reluctantly voted for him at the time.

Also, this.

In hindsight, probably escaping literally anywhere else would be a much better idea

Democracy yes, naturally. But I would disagree on a return of the monarchy being universally unpopular or unsustainable.

Hindenburg without reservation, as my forefathers did.

I am very concerned at the small number Americans here who assume Thaelmann is the fount of all goodness and a lesser evil.

I think it mostly comes from knowing nothing about him, a small amount about Hindenburg and a lot about Hitler.

I have no love or even respect for Thalmann, but we all know how Hindemburg's time in office went and who we ended up with as chancellor

Spoiled ballot in hindsight, at time Hindenburg while hoping for an autocoup that would restore the monarchy.
