Colin Powell ran a close victory over Pat Buchanan in the Republican primaries, as Ross Perot ran unopposed for the nomination for the Reform Party. Will Powell be able to benefit from the Republican Revolution, will Jerry Brown get elected to a second term, or will Ross Perot become the first independent president since before the Civil War?

Despite Colin Powell holding an early lead in polling, the Republicans were once again overtaken by both Brown and Perot. Although the two were very close in the popular vote, Brown easily won the electoral vote once again, setting up two open primaries in 2000.
