largely an outdated and crude message. I'm not ideologically opposed to them, just in a utilitarian way they suck.

They can be good, but only if they have some relation to actual science. If not, then a "born on" date would make better sense.

I am for mandating the labeling, but against prohibiting selling products that are past the sell-by date.

I think there ought to be uniformity of labeling, and an understanding of what it means. In that sense, I don't really have a problem with this, as it can be confusing to decipher what the various dates and wordings that go with them on food products are supposed to tell me.
