Massive FF, and civil rights is certainly not the only reason he's a FF.

I very nearly voted HP because I thought it was going to be "Martin Luther". One of the people whose HP-voters merit being shot, of course.

What's wrong the original Martin Luther?

Anyways massive FF.
Martin Luther was a big anti semite

Ofc by that criteria a good majority of the people born before the 20th Century (at least those were aware of the existence of Judaism) were anti-Semites. Still curious if that's Simfan's reasoning though.

Because Catholicism.

The 15th/16th-century Catholic Church was one of the most rottenly evil institutions humanity has ever known.

Lolno. I mean, sure, it had a number of bad apples (just like every other organisation), who were rather corrupt, but to describe it as rottenly evil is something of an exaggeration.

It had so many bad apples the organization turned rotten.

By "a few bad apples" do you mean "multiple Popes"?

FF, and one of the most underrated people in US History due to the extreme whitewashing of his socialist views on society in favor of a feel good message that doesn't alienate polite conservatives and social librules.

Well, I'm not entirely convinced that the Popes of the late 15th and early 16th centuries were particularly bad. They were certainly infinitely superior to the crop that were around during the 10th and 11th centuries, who really were scraping the bottom of the barrel. I mean, they are often criticised for their worldliness and corruption, but let's remember that, in addition to their religious offices, they also served as the head of state of a secular body of territory (the Papal States) which they frequently had to defend from other Italian states. They were also, on a regular basis, forced to conduct diplomacy and to try and mediate between a variety of European powers, including the Habsburgs and the Kingdom of France, which inevitably led to some dodgy dealing. In my view, the worst 'sin' of the Church during that time was its indecisiveness, and failure (up until the time of Pope Paul III) to respond adequately to the challenge of the Protestant Reformation. Even then, this was partly because they were constantly put upon by events outside of their control (for example, Clement VII's indecisiveness as England slid towards breaking with Rome can be attributed to having to constantly watch his back for fear of the anger of Emperor Charles V, no friend to the English King of the time).

But, going back to the Popes themselves, sure, some of them were a bit nepotistic (although European society as a whole was highly nepotistic at the time, so they were hardly outrageous offenders in that), greedy, worldly etcetera. That's all true, but, on the other hand, many were patrons of the arts, financed the building of fine new religious houses, acted as diplomats, attempting to mediate the consistent conflicts between the Princes of Europe. Others did things which can be interpreted as being well ahead of their time; for instance, Paul III issued a Bull condemning the Atlantic slave trade. Of course, they had many faults, but, so do we all, and many of these Popes really tried their best to carry through what they felt their responsibilities were.
