Wishful thinking only so long as capitalist social relations and individual capitalist enterprise remains. With the abolition of capitalism and the liquidation of the capitalist class, there's no reason to think that it would be an impossibility. (Especially given the numerous examples of workers' self-management from the Paris Commune to the Zapatista communities in Mexico)

The asset-owning classes and institutions are almost completely uninvolved in day-to-day. We already have workers' self-management, and the results are completely predictable. The workers establish a system of merit-based pay, and since the highest-paid employees are also educated, they have some respect for the plight of ownership.
