Hoover was a smart guy who could have been a great President but decided to sink the economy by allowing the Smoot-Hawley Tariff. Considering the importance of trade post WW1, anyone who would push for a tariff certainly isn't fit to hold any office.

Reagan on the other hand was great at being an actor, which is why America is still in love with him, despite Iran Contra, and ballooning the debt, and trying to bring back friggen battleships, and all the other terrible things that were allowed to happen.

Between the two Hoover is the better no doubt.

Reagan was a terrible actor. His charisma was all real. He was nothing but himself all the way.

The Smoot-Hawley Tariff did not cause the Great Depression. Please stop repeating this thoroughly debunked canard.

Much less, then. Hoover campaigned against the creation of Social Security and the FDIC - both programmes Reagan supported.

Hoover also took a decidedly "liberal" approach to dealing with the stock market crash, and it certainly didn't help curb the wave of Depression.
