I do live in the Midwest, but SSM will come to my state possibly in 10 years.  Once it spreads to a majority of states, than a SCOTUS ruling for the entire nation would be more practical.  There would be less backlash by then.

A fair point. Still, passing legislation to make it legal nationwide now and having SCOTUS uphold it would probably be the final blow to the prominence of the social conservative movement.
Wasn't that supposed to be Roe v. Wade?

There wasn't really a national consensus at the time.

Red is illegal, yellow is legal, the other colours are something in between. At the time of Roe v Wade, abortion was illegal in most states. That court decision completely blew away restrictions and caused a vicious backlash that birthed the social conservative movement. If they had let legislation go first, there probably would've been some compromise like in the UK that most states could live with.

Letting the courts set social policy set the pro-abortion movement back in the long run as opposition has been far more strident and longstanding than on other social issues.

Just end tax favoritism of marriage if that's all you're talking about here. But really, marriage is the LEAST important aspect of the LGBT Rights movement, as the number of states you can get fired for being gay far outnumbers those you cannot, along with homelessness and high suicide rates among young LGBT Americans. To boil gay rights down to marriage and marriage alone is ridiculous, short-sighted, and exactly why the gay rights movement has become less of a "movement" and more of a business at this point.
This almost exactly.  I have quite a problem with the adult gay rights movement in general, since it's basically being lead by middle-aged wealthy urbanites who don't have to worry about losing their jobs due to their sexuality anymore because they're in liberal areas, and therefore assume that it's the same for all gays across the country.  And they never even talk about gay conversion therapy unless it's in regards to the Bachman couple.  I hate to give Chris Christie any credit at all, but one of probably three good things he's done as Governor has been the gay conversion therapy ban.  I have a friend whose parents make him go to that, and the fact that the adult gay rights movement seems to overlook it always makes my blood boil because of what he goes through.  And he has the luck of not having been kicked out yet.

Option 5, of course.  The only sensible option, IMHO.

Well considering it's your opinion, reality will show that it is the least sensible option.
