The Labour Party won a majority government in the last election to the surprise of many, however, the Prime Minister, J.R. Clynes, announces his resignation after just over four years on the job, citing illness and exhaustion. The Labour Party is divided between two camps. Those favoring Ramsay MacDonald, a more conservative man who is advocating keeping Britain in the gold standard, something Clynes had wanted to change, and a balanced budget. His opponent is Arthur Henderson, the popular moderate leftist who, although also amenable to balancing the budget is opposed to MacDonald's plan to cut unemployment benefits, lest it hurt a fragile economy by cutting consumer income.
