Question: Should Muon be expected make a statement on his upcoming vote to legalize same-sex marriage or not?
#1
Yes, even if it's not required, it would be bad form if he ignored the issue.

#2
No, it's totally up to him if he wants to talk about it.

Illinois will vote soon to legalize same-sex marriage. One of our members is a state legislator who has opposed similar legislation in the past and whose party and district presumably opposes it.

Does he owe us an explanation? Or if he ignores the issue and continues talking about others, is that ok?

Note that this is all about people's feelings and not about what can be "required."

No, he doesn't really owe us an explanation. I do think he would owe his constituents an explanation, which we should be able to access since it is public domain. No one on this forum should have to talk about an issue if they don't want to.

Option 2: We have freedom of speech. Muon does not have to explain it here on the Atlas, though an official statement as an elected official to his constituents is important.

It would be nice to get a statement from him, and I'll admit I'll be a little miffed if we don't, but it's obviously not like he has to or anything.

I'd like for him to. But it's his call.

Muon owes us nothing.  Obviously I would hope he votes on the side of freedom, but no matter how he votes it is within his rights (and, also the obviously prudent thing to do) to not bring it up here.

Just because someone here is an office holder doesn't mean we have the right to demand anything of them. If Muon wants to make a statement, that's cool. If not, that's cool too.

Obviously, I'm hoping he votes for gay marriage. Having met him in person, I respect him a lot. And I know I'm not the only one here who does.

If he votes against I don't really want to hear from him about it. It's better to just let him be.

Unless, of course, they live in the totally fascist environment of a dung beetle's stomach.

muon2 gets to do something more important than make a statement on Atlas.
He gets to vote on it.
We'll find out what he thinks then.

I have reason to believe that Muon2 will explain his decision to us once he has made it. That is all.

Well one other thing. If I had the time, there is one particular person that I would call for additional explanation, etc., not Muon2. But I just don't really. I am really stressed for time at the moment, and thus among other things, my posts these days are rather arid.

He has no reason to make a statement to us, but, if I was living in his district, I would expect a statement on it (and other major votes) to his voters.

An elected officer must explain his controversial votes to his district (and this one is controversial, no matter how he will vote, some people of his district will complain).

So, not to us, but to people in his district, yes.
