Coats was planning on running before Bayh announced he wouldn't run, so this is certainly conceivable. Personally, I wouldn't have campaigned for either candidate but would have supported Bayh.

Bayh is better than most Democrats, but Coats.  After all, it was 2010, so the person with the R next to their name.

No, I honestly believe Coats is worse (old hat corrupt lobbyist type), but my point is, he said "its 2010, so I'd vote just because the R is next to their name" and 2010 was a year when Tea Partiers dominated, and I'm wondering why when he seemingly hates the Tea Party.

Coats was very lucky Indiana has fairly early primaries - Stutzman was just starting to gain traction in the final weeks before the primary. There was also the unfortunate fact that Stutzman and Hostettler split the "Tea Party" vote. Had that primary occurred one month later, or if Indiana had runoffs, Stutzman would be the Senior US Senator from Indiana. I'm positive.
