In university, we were required to take two theology classes to graduate. One class I took was called "Political Theology"; we only spent a class or two on the Bible. For the other class I took a course called "Introduction to Biblical Literature" which was very interesting. We obviously didn't read the whole thing, but only excerpts. It was focused mostly on a social and historical analysis of the bible. I found the study of the Old Testament much, much more interesting, especially when we went through the text and discerned which of the anonymous authors had written a section, based on how their version of God acted, the message they were trying to teach, etc. Other than reading the Bible for these two classes, I never have.

King is also correct that as far as the Bible's value as a literary work goes, it does not compare favorably to other religious texts. It's much less interesting philosophically than a number of Eastern texts, and much less beautifully written than the Koran.

I've read a 'modern Russian' translation of the Old Testament and the original English Book of Mormon. The New Testament, never. For mine is a jealous God.
