I think you should have to be a citizen living inside a State to vote.

Oh, and you should also have to own land. Wink

People living in DC or Puerto Rico can't vote, but people who live in Paris can?  Doesn't make all that much sense....but they pay taxes too, so they should get votes.

Those who are stationed overseas, seeking an education oversees, or oversees for business should be allowed to. Your poll is confusing, though, because you ask whether people who don't live in the U.S. should be able to vote. Vote where? What sort of people - just international citizens or those with U.S. citizenship?

By the way, Erc, I think you meant something other than DC.

If a person is a US citizen, they should be allowed to vote, even if they don't currently reside in the US.

If you don't live in the US, what business do you have voting?

Erm...yeah.  Forgot about the 24th amendment there.

What about the military stationed in Iraq, or anyplace else overseas? They've been out of the US for a long time, most of them. You could well argue that they don't live in the US anymore, and thus shouldn't be allowed to vote.

If you are a US citizen, even if you don't live in the US, you still pay taxes in the US. That's enough reason right there to get a right to vote.

If you want to try to revoke their US citizenship, that's fine, but otherwise citizens have the right to vote.

Military should be allowed to vote.

Since when do U.S. citizens pay taxes to the U.S. when they don't live there?

They usually have investments, property, etc. back in the States which they still have to pay taxes on.

So they can sell it if they don't like the taxes. People who don't live here have no business making laws for us, with the exception of the military.

Well, as a former ex-pat, I think we're going to have to learn to agree to disagree.

Although I would agree that dual citizens living in the other country in which they claim citizenship should not be allowed to vote here.

If you enter the US for more than 30 days per annum, and you are a US citizen you must pay tax on income above $85K. I think this earns one the right to vote... but then I'm an ex pat living outside US.

If you normally reside within the US, yes.  (ie. military, diplomats, contractors, etc.)

If you're just a citizen but truly live overseas, no.
