I noticed that Chellie Pingree underperformed Obama's margin of victory in her district. Michaud did much better, but his district as a whole leans more Republican.

An open seat is almost always going to be closer than an incumbent. Hell, Tom Allen always hovered around 60% in his re-election bids. Pingree will win, especially since her opponent doesn't look that impressive.

As for ME-02, Michaud is safer than safe.

Pingree is a weak incumbent, but I doubt she's in any danger there.

Chellie Pingree isn't a strong incumbent, but poor first-time performances for a new candidate in an open seat is almost universal in all liberal democratic political systems. If you don't understand that, it's back to basics for you. Michaud won't move, and that's good, since he's a Franco.

Why are there two options for no Republican gains?
