And I don't just mean by changing the words (as Gil Kirlikowske has done), but in actual policy as well.

Absolutely.  It should be much higher on our agenda.

Of course. I'm a little surprised, though, with Keller's answer given the position he was arguing in a few drug threads.

Sure, except for the most severe such as meth. But yeah, marijuana should be legal, cocaine illegal but decriminalized, and other mild ones decriminalized.

Nah, do something sneaky with things like meth. Keep the production and distribution illegal, but the addict shouldn't be criminalised because of his addiction. If he commits crimes because of it he should be prosecuted separately from that and have easy access to therapy and rehab.

The war on drugs is about as just as the war in Iraq.

Agreed. Ideally spend some of that on rehabilitating drug addicts, but even just legalizing or decriminalizing illicit drugs would be preferable to the current situation.

And who gets to define the "most severe?"  Perhaps the same type of person who recommended marijuana to be banned because his close relative served on the board of Du Point who just patented a method to turn wood pulp into paper and banning hemp, the most amazing source of paper in the world, would be a huge boost?

No.  Anyone with half a brain can see the war on drugs have absolutely NO benefit for the country.  Legalize, tax, and regulate.  ALL drugs including prescription drugs.  My body, my choice, my abortion, my drugs, end of story.

The story of addiction is a tragedy, but the War on Drugs is an even greater one. End it.
