Regardless of your party, who would you have liked to see as the Republican candidate in 1960?

This will be an ongoing series through the 2008 season. Don't forget to vote in the 1960 Democratic Primary

Haven't we done these already? In any case, I vote for Barry Goldwater.

Defeating Kennedy is what counts (just not with Rockefeller ideally). Nixon being a Californian is also an important factor to be considered.

Winning is over-rated.

It's strange that so many libertarians and libertarian-leaning conservatives have chosen Nixon over Goldwater. Nixon hated Buckley's conservative movement (although he duly pandered to them when he needed the votes) and his administration was probably more statist overall than Clinton's. There really wasn't much of a difference between him and Kennedy on the issues, and Kennedy did propose the largest income tax cut before Reagan, something I doubt Nixon would've done.

Normally yes. But it's different when your opponent is a Kennedy.

I'm a libertarian and I hate (and would have hated) them, too. Buckley was a statist - "we must accept Big Government for the duration" - and Goldwater was an imperialist war-hawk utterly devoted to the military-industrial complex - he was not a libertarian.

With hindsight? Goldwater. Nixon was going to lose anyway and Rockefeller is too liberal.

But would you prefer Goldwater/Buckley conservatism to what the Democrats were offering in 1960?

Not really, no. Kennedy's tax cut and action on civil rights is superior to Republican conservatism.
