I admired the chap's commercial skills (he was a trader originally, and then married a very rich older woman who owned a trading company, which gave him the funds to finance his more ambitious enterprise). A lot of his theology reads like an early day uniform commercial code, and it gave the Muslims a big advantage in trade for awhile, until those nasty Portuguese outgunned them, and closed the Muslim trading ports by force of arms, attended by  a peculiarly virulent form of religious fanaticism suffused with avarice and greed.

HP.  As a sold-out Christian, I resent the fact that Mohammed tried to discredit the work and death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  Thank God he was unsuccessful.

Er, no. Jesus is venerated as a prophet and a messenger of God, in Islam, and his Gospel, while not at the same level as the Koran, is considered a religious text.

In fairness, what Bush Oklahoma probably meant was that Muslims think that Jesus was not crucified and that someone else was on the cross, which goes against one of the biggest elements of Christianity.

A vastly superior thinker and metaphysician to Christ. Without Islam Europe would have remained a primitive Christian backwater in the Dark Ages.
