No, she won due to her margins in the old mill towns. Most of the rich Boston commuterites voted in the Republican primary.

I understand Maine a little (un poco), but I'm curious what Al expects.  I know about the French Canadians and the old industrial areas vs. the coastline and the towns down south.

Of course, Maine people are a little odd, and that could play into thinking.

The question I have is, is Maine more like the parts of NH Obama won, or the parts Clinton won?

Obama. Obama won the rural parts and the 2nd congressional district. Clinton won due to her margins in exurban Boston.

Yes and no. Clinton also won the very rural north of NH, which is much like the northern counties of Maine (Piscataquis, Aroostook, Somerset), and some areas (Bath, Brunswick) are much more working-class than anywhere in NH.

There is also a high rate of Green Party registration in Maine because of the success of the Maine Green-Independents. They would likely support Obama, but the Maine caucus is closed.

My only anecdotal evidence for Maine is my ultra-liberal aunt who lives in West Bath. She's supporting  Obama, but I suspect her husband has Green Party registration; he's even more liberal and less partisan.

When I say "un poco", I really mean "un poco" on this one, walter...  Smiley

What percentage of Mainers are French Canadians anyway?

I could see Obama losing the 2nd district, but no way can I see him losing the Portland area, which would guarantee the 1st district, and probably enough votes for the state.

10% identify as French and 6.4% identify as French-Canadian.

Bill Bradley beat Gore in the Portland area and still lost.
