Today, I recieved a new lecture from the Teaching Company (I would highly recomend that you check out their website, BTW).  This one was on the origins of American political thought.  They mentioned the founding of Pennsylvania and how is was intended to be "the best country for a poor man."  Then I got to thinking exactly what that means.  And so, the poll question.

Discuss.

The latter. I think leftists would argue that the two are one and the same; rightists would of course say that they are mutually exclusive. I agree with neither position, but I feel that opportunities for all are more important than equal support for all.

Providing for the poor excessively stifles the oppurtunity to become rich just as much, therefore obviously Option 2

The first, becuase I don't want to see hoboes wandering the streets outside my mansion. However, the two countries would probably be very similar.

...And, in just two posts, leftists and rightists have fulfilled my predictions.

The latter, provided these opportunities were for everyone, not just those who were already fairly well-off.

I think both options lead back to option 1.  Helping the poor the most will create the most opportunities for everyone to seek wealth.

I believe people can become wealthy and succeed on their own if they have the opportunity.  Most rich and many middle class people already have that opportunity if they have the motivation to do it.

Poor people are often stuck in that situation because they don't have access to the things that will open up opportunities to become successful.

So how do you make opportunities for people to become wealthy?

You fund good schools, keep people healthy, and encourage creativity and innovation for everybody, including the poor.

God, it's a catch 22 and my head is going to explode.
