At a fund-raising event on November 5th, a bomb suddenly detonates. It kills 50 people, among them President Bush and Vice-President Cheney. Within a few hours, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is sworn in. She soon takes on the role of an incumbent candidate in the 2008 Presidential Election. Meanwhile, the GOP decides to run Mitt Romney, after much in-fighting and the departure of Fred Thompson due to "health concerns."

Discuss what happens next, with maps if possible.

Pelosi/Pelosi.

The nation unites around Pelosi, though some criticize her for not appointing a Republican Vice President and then resigning.

In this instance, I would probably go for a third party, but, if forced, I would vote Pelosi.

Pelosi: 291
Romney: 247
It would also depend on the running mates, and how good a job Pelosi does as President.

I don't care for Pelosi and I won't vote for Romney.

Third Party/Pelosi.

Acting President Pelosi nominates former Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack for Vice President, after having four other potential nominees reject the offer.  Vilsack is confirmed by the House and Senate within two weeks after being nominated.

Pelosi runs with Vilsack in the 2008 election.

Republican nominee Romney picks Governor Mark Sanford of South Carolina for Vice President.

Romney crushes Pelosi in the election.

San Francisco liberal Pelosi is completely unsuited as a Presidential nominee, and does not win national office, incumbent Acting President or not.

Thank you for your insight.

It is perfectly obvious, or should be perfectly obvious, that Pelosi is simply not Presidential timber, and that would become painfully clear to the electorate during the campaign.

Pelosi is great as a Congresswoman for a liberal district in San Francisco, and as a member of the House, and even does a credible job as Speaker, but as a national candidate at the Presidential level, forget it.

Romney and Pelosi are both horrible national-candidates, but Pelosi is a democrat, so she wins.
