From 1997 to 2021:

Red=Democratic, Blue=Republican
1997: Ruth Messinger
2001: Mark Green
2005: Fernando Ferrer
2009: Bill Thompson

2013: Joe Lhota
2017: Nicole Malliotakis
2021: Curtis Sliwa

To me, probably Mark Green or Bill Thompson. Green lost because he ran a racially divisive runoff campaign against Fernando Ferrer in 2001, and Black and Latino voters stayed home, and Bloomberg won in '01.

Thompson has executive experience, but no charisma or message.

All the others were meh.

NYC mayors and runner-ups don't have a political future
