Joe Biden's (and John Frémont's) two best states.

Massachusetts is a great state, but I feel like I'd be quicker to fall in love with Vermont.

Vermont sounds like a plan.

I have a friend who's son lives there. He loves it.

Vermont on average, although MA does have some good spots.

As the only two states I’ve ever lived in, I feel I can provide some #analysis here.

Mass (specifically Eastern Mass/Greater Boston) is my ancestral home and where nearly all of my family resides, while Vermont is the state that I mostly grew up in, but I still spent my fair share of time in both states as a kid.

While Western Mass has lots of similarities with VT (mountainous terrains and small picturesque towns with churches built in the 18th/19th centuries at the center), Greater Boston where I live now, is an entirely different world and is a very densely populated coastal culture as opposed to the rural mountainous environment of Vermont/Western Mass.

As far as where you’d rather live it depends on what type of person you are. If you like oceans/beaches better than mountains (as I do) then definitely pick Massachusetts for obvious reasons. If you like mountains Vermont definitely has the edge.

If you like action and excitement then pick Massachusetts, but if you prefer peace and quiet then Vermont all day. If you want something in the middle then move to Western Mass (most of the towns are very rural but you’re also much closer to major urban areas than most of Vermont is).

I left VT for Mass 9 years ago when I was 17, and haven’t felt much desire to go back. Vermont is a beautiful state, but as someone in my mid-20s Mass offers so much more in terms of entertainment, employment, meeting new people etc.

The other thing that cannot be understated about Vermont, is how insanely difficult it is to find a job as a young person, that offers a reasonable salary. Vermont used to be cheap but times have changed, and most employers in VT pay like it’s still 1989. Massachusetts (particularly Boston area) is still more expensive than Vermont, but the sheer number of jobs in Mass make it much easier to find a job that pays enough to deal with the very high COL.

TLDR: Voted Massachusetts, but ask me again in 10 years.

I was told by a Connecticut native that I had too much work ethic for the hippies in Vermont.

Massachusetts because I like to visit Boston.  But I probably wouldn't like it so much if I were to live there.

Theoretically I would prefer VT but I feel like MA is so much bigger I'm more likely to end up there.

Massachusetts because it's more urban and has a coast.

Nothing against Vermont, but Massachusetts is more urban which is a bit more appealing to me.

MA is my strong preference (full disclosure - I'll probably be retiring there in a few years). VT is nice, but lacking in amenities. As Matt pointed out I can get a strong VT vibe in western MA, but there's nothing in VT to match eastern MA. For a short-distance getaway from the Boston area I prefer ME to VT.

I lean toward Vermont, but outside of the more urban areas even suburban Mass is pretty tolerable. Of course, considering things like jobs, I have to echo others and say Mass is a lot better for finding work. Vermont would be good to retire to or move to if you could work remotely, though.

Both are low on my list but Massachusetts has enough diversity along a number of axes so I'm pretty sure I'd be happier there.

Obviously Massachusetts.

Living in Vermont seems perfect, but it is one of those things that's best left as a fantasy.
