An election showdown between the most unpopular presidents of the recent times going into a midterm year. Who would win this battle of titans with approval ratings in the 30s?

One could average the 2006 generic ballot with the results we eventually get for 2022 to see what might happen but Biden would probably overpreform it. For one thing he's only been in office 2 years, Bush was facing the 6 year itch. For another he's not actually down to Bush levels of unpopularity. The average of the two years is 2014.

I can reasonably foresee numbers going back to how they were in 2014. That would be like what? 30 something house seats and 3-4 senate seats? Maybe it's a R+4-5 electorate. If it becomes a 40/4-5 situation, I can see Biden declining to run and if they go on to lose Colorado or Katie Porter's seat or something like that, I can see him retiring.

Biden is unpopular but does not evoke the visceral rage that a lot of people felt towards Bush and Cheney in 2006. I'd hate to actually see such an election play out... I would vote third party.
