I'm a resident of the new CA-45. I have learned many things about the history of the war from where I live. The NVA and Viet Cong committed the largest ground force war crimes in the Vietnam War. It it fine to think the NVA/Viet Cong weren't "good guys"? The biggest massacre killed at least 2,800 civilians.

Yes. It's rare in a war to have an obvious clear cut "good" side vs. "bad" side. WWII in Europe has obscured that because of its massive cultural impact and the singularly evil regime of Nazi Germany. It's similar to how WWII created a cultural expectation (in the US, anyway) of total victory in subsequent conflicts, despite the rarity of such outcomes in wars.

Didn't the now defunct alternative newspaper Los Angeles Free Press try to push a narrative that the PAVN and Viet Cong were the clear cut "good guys"? How widely known is it that the communist forces were the ones who killed the most civilians in the Vietnam War?

WWII was also an unusual U.S. war in that it had overwhelming and lasting public support.  The norm appears to have been for there to be a significant amount of dissent.  Even during the Revolution, a significant percentage of Americans remained loyal to (and in many cases fought for) Britain.

Surely it's obvious* that the Communist side were not the good guys?

*As it is the vast majority of the time.

In this case I'd say it's not obvious at all, any more than it's obvious that being non-Communist makes a "side" good.
