I’m not trolling. My friend Tyrone, who is African American, is a life long Democrat, but just told me that he’s not voting for Eric Adams and he is voting for Curtis Sliwa even though he voted for Eric Adams in the primary. Also, he said there are tons of others like him who are not voting for Adams and voting Sliwa. We discussed this all today at our local bagel shop. (Good bagels by the way, I recommend the egg bagels)

This is what may happen in closed primary states, where voters can only vote in the primaries of the party they’re registered with, regardless of the extent to which the voter still identifies with that party. This is also rather common in places like the Deep South and Appalachia, where large numbers of voters registered to the Democratic Party will vote Republican in general elections regardless of how they voted in the primary. For example, exit polls from the 2016 Democratic primary in West Virginia (a closed primary state) indicated that about a third of all such voters planned to vote for Trump in the general election (more specifically, 33% for Trump against Sanders and 36% for Trump against Hillary), and given that Bush & McCain each won a third of self-identified Democrats en route to victories here in 2004 and 2008, respectively, this was a clear indication that Trump was going to be favored in WV regardless of who his Democratic opponent was. If you want to reduce the number of voters like this, the best way to do so is to switch to an open primary system where people can choose which party’s primary they prefer to vote in.

Very interesting. How old is he, and what was his rationale for supporting Adams in the primary?
