Yes, we have so much unused land here it's ridiculous.

Why?
because it's the best thing possible for the environment. Which is a thing we should all want to protect. We should be increasing the amount of unused land.
The modern left is really dropping the ball on environmental education.
That's a pretty simplistic way of looking at it all. The type and quality of unused land matters, and moderate human use usually doesn't decrease ecosystem services massively. Furthermore, it's much better to degrade certain environments (the Great Plains, for example) if that degradation can ensure preservation of others (like the Amazon.) You have to view it all holistically.
of course it's better to free up land nature can "use" than it is to free up land even nature has a hard time doing something with. (it's better to free up land in, say, moist New Jersey than it would be to free up land in dry ass New Mexico), and I never suggested otherwise. A guy from the Garden State asked why it was better to free up land, I answered that question.
