Honestly, ignoring that 1996 and 2012 called for fundamentally different views on some things, I don't see much of a difference.  Both, at the time of running, were dignified conservatives with unoffensive temperaments and a preference for a more intellectual conservatism over brash and dangerous populist rhetoric full of empty promises meant to fool voters.

I suppose I will go with the one I actually voted for, Romney ... but this was a tough choice, as the combination of the awesome Bob Dole SNL skits and actually seeing him once at the Four Seasons in Chicago made it close!  (I wish I could remember that better, as that's likely the first and last time I will stay at the Four Seasons paid for, lol.)

I like both, but I still prefer Romney 2012 by a longshot.

Dole 1996 because he gave us some great Simpsons gags without ever posing a serious threat to Clinton.

Dole was a quiet dignified conservative who liked it when people died from being unable to afford healthcare.  Absolute.joke of a politician and man who proves that you can live forever without a conscience (like Kissinger). I give Romney the slight edge here for at least supporting the rule of law.
