Often deeply annoying.

He covers topics that are worth consideration, but with repetition and no great insight.  He relies too much upon single cases to prove a larger concept.  Instead of giving an example of the situation and then a broader scope, he just gives lots of examples of the situation.

When not on his soapbox, he's certainly quite decent.  However, he is rarely not on his soapbox - at least the last time I watched his show.

Disapprove, I suppose.

Good, down to earth, and honest man, unlike other cable TV evening hosts.  Definitely a freedom fighter, although he probably voted Bush twice.

One of the better broadcasters on cable news. He's pretty damn good on economic issues.

He can be pretty bad at times, though. Overall a freedom fighter.

And yes, he is a Republican but he has quite a few Democratic leanings as well.

Horrible person. Every episode invariably consists of a segment on illegal immigration, and another segment on "exporting America." Apparently, nothing else is newsworthy. More importantly, "objective" is missing from his dictionary. He does not give us the news; he gives us his personal opinions, ad nauseam.

Massive Freedom Fighter.  I read his book Exporting America and actually cited it in an essay on outsourcing in America.

If being against illegal immigration makes you a xenophobe, then it's certainly not a bad thing.

Open Letter to Lou Dobbs

Message to Lou Dobbs
Dear Mr Dobbs:

Your program on CNN has become increasingly xenophobic and practically unwatchable. Your fixation with insecure borders, the outsourcing of America, and other themes really belong on Fox News. The exaggeration of your concerns, and hijacking what once was a perfectly informative business news program (aaah...how I miss Willow Bay!), borders on paranoia.

I wonder if illegal immigration from Europe (did your forefathers arrive with an H1B visa?), or outsourcing to Ireland would bother you as much as illegal immigration from Mexico our outsourcing to India.

Lou, the heart of the matter is this: Why is it OK for your show, which is essentially a media service, to be consumed by viewers around the world, while an Indian developer, say, selling his service - offshore software development - to customers in the United States is a cause for alarm? What is the difference? Doesn't your program endanger the livelihoods of business news anchors around the world? Should we ban CNN from global broadcasting? Of course not.

Why can't you accept that the globalization of trade, which the U.S. has championed as a key tenet of it's foreign economic policy, flows both ways? The developing world already has the terms of trade stacked against in agricultural products (see Stiglitz, Globalization and Its Discontents). Are services next?

How can we expect the next wave of Corporate America's growth to come from "emerging markets" like India, China, and Brazil, if we deny those countries' citizens the ability to earn a living by exporting products and services in which they enjoy a comparative advantage? With what income, Mr. Dobbs, do you propose that these people buy satellite dishes ( to watch your show), eat Big Macs, and set up Citibank accounts?

Finally, I can't help but notice your penchant for fine clothing. Are your suits Italian? Are your ties French? English shirts? Surely you must wear a Swiss watch. All those screens in your studio - I bet they were manufactured somewhere in Asia. Your PC? I haven't seen one Made in America for years. What do you drive, Lou? I picture you in a Mercedes S500 (okay, maybe a Cadillac). Do you see where this is going, Lou? You are "outsourcing" hard-working American fashion, watchmaking, electronics hardware, and automotive jobs!

A man of your intellect knows better. Knock it off with the xenophobia and take an evening course in macro-economics (or dust off those Ec 10 notes from Harvard College).

I know isn't that crazy? He has the same 2 topics on every single night for the past three years.

I voted FF, b/c CNN needs a few Republicans. I watched him back in 2002 when the economy was doing bad and the Dow lost like 50 points every day. Now that he's on the immigration/outsourcing thing, I don't watch him at all.

Horrible Person.  I used to watch the show a lot and only saw one guest with whom he disagreed.

He seems pretty moderate, so I voted FF for not being crazy-right wing.

Earth to Pym, he's about as liberal as CNN gets.
