Question: is it ok to mock teenagers with politics you disagree with?
#1
yes, everyone should be mocked from time to time

#2

#3

If they're espousing fashy views or are just flat out being a c**t and they are old enough to know better (15 and older may be the cut off, any younger and I would be upset at the parents instead of the kid) then yes, you should be able to mock them. Not just a "if you disagree with them" thing, but like, if they're doing nazi salutes to troll people or calling immigrants a scourge or something, but it also works for the edgy teenage leftists that say America deserved 9/11 or whatever

Yes, but those who "give them a platform" deserve the bulk of the scorn.

Making fun of anyone for their politics is morally sound and just.

Making fun of their politics is fine.

Making fun of them, especially if they are under 18, is a pretty big no-no in my book.

Strikes me as punching down. There are plenty of adults who are much more worthy of mockery.

If you've willingly become a public figure, then you've agreed to be mocked. Full stop. No one is exempt.

Yup this, You can defend Greta by defending her argument but you can't defend her from getting mocked because she's a kid.

How about acknowledging the difference in power between the president of the United States and a sixteen-year-old I'll be at a famous One, and the tone of criticism being less mocking and more just outright dickish?

I don't think people are saying young activist like this are immune from criticism, but rather that critics should follow just basic rules of humanity and not be a raging turd. Trump of course failed this, as have most of his cultists on this forum.

i mean yeah but still it can be like, not cool you know.

idk the situation with this girl and like, trump or whatever and i really don't care, but like, i mean making fun of a kid is kind of a dick move, wouldn't you say? i mean maybe they opened themselves up to it but does that mean you should just because you can? i guess is what i'm saying.

idk man i just don't think it's cool to be like, attacking people so much or whatever you know or idk. like everybody could just get chill you know.

I think it's deserved in Thunberg's case because I genuinely don't think she believes a word she's saying. Every time she goes into her "How dare you" routine, or says some bull like "I should be in school," she sounds like a bad child actress from a TV movie. I was 16 pretty recently; I know all teenagers aren't the same, but at the same time I don't believe for a second that she views all of this attention and praise as some kind of noble sacrifice on her part-- as if she'd rather be back in a classroom like all the other kids. The truth is that she's adding nothing to the climate change debate that any other teenager couldn't say, so there's really no value in listening to her or giving her any more of the attention she clearly wants.

I believe that you are either an ignorant or you have loads of hatred, bitterness and bad faith in the depths of your tortured soul. Probably both. One of the main traits of people with Asperger is uncompromising sincerity. Period.

Rude. For all you know, I have asperger's and my uncompromising sincerity forced me to explain why I don't like Greta Thunberg.

Then you have a problem with empathy, Smiling John,  or maybe you are not telling the all the truth. If you have Asperger and you know Aspergers don't lie, your slanderous claim is inexcusable. I don't believe you

Your anger is making you incoherent-- and worse, humorless. Nothing I have said here displays a lack of empathy. I stated that I did not find a person's (fake) indignation very believable, and you chose to launch ad-hominem attacks at me. You are being emotionally manipulated by the interest groups engineering Thunberg's media rise, and you are using her youth as a shield against all criticism, feigning indignation in lieu of a reasonable response.

If I am expected to believe that this display is genuine, then perhaps I do lack empathy. But you lack a skeptical mind.

Really? The case in question is very simple, actually. Everybody knows Greta Thunberg is a person with Asperger syndrome. This is a condition that entails some particular traits, such as: poor social skills, intense interests or characteristic speaking mannerisms. Often their intense interest on a particular issue is accompanied by remarkable talents and they never lie. The indignation of Greta Thunberg is genuine; even the most blunt and narrow-minded climate skeptic should know that Aspergers are not able to fake emotions. That's an impossibility. By claiming that Greta Thunberg is an imposter, you are revealing to be an ignorant in what regards her condition and a liar.

Life is hard. Be a man. Focus on what you are going to do to the world instead of what the world does to you.

That said, the mocker opens themselves up to ridicule as well.

For views they're publicly espousing? Yes. Mocking "goes with the job" when you're a public figure. I'd be a hypocrite if I've claimed I never mocked a teenager, who's a public figure, for things they said.

Going with stuff like "lol autism", as in Greta's case. No. When Barron was mocked personally, I considered that to be below the belt.
