IMO Democrats wouldn’t object if it were known that McCain could show up if needed - the optics of trying to ‘seize’ the chamber while McCain is away due to illness would be pretty poor. They might try and strike a deal with Rs to go along with things without a hassle in exchange for a chairmanship position or two on certain committees though - that would probably be the far more savvy (and classy) play.
