Do you think John Cox has the potential to knock off Gavin Newsom? Might be a bit of a stretch esp. given Newsom's political notability in a solid blue state.

Absolutely not. This is just not a good year for Republicans in what has become a nearly impossible state for them to compete statewide in.

Cox will lose by between 18-30 points. No chance at all. Beyond a couple of weird hiccups (like being anti-death penalty, fairly pro drug legalization, two policies i don't think will get him many voters) he's largely a Republican of the Trump brand and he's not afraid to say the Presidents name. That's a bad brand for a state where Trump lost by 30 points. And that's not mention Cox is a Chicago Carpetbagger and perennial candidate for office who just has money to blow for some reason.

Even in 2010 with a millionaire self-funding candidate Republicans lost by double digits. This is not shaping up to be a good Republican year and Cox is a pretty terrible candidate.

This. Cox is a weaker candidate than Whitman, even without the political climate. I actually thought he would be a moderate like Arnie and Travis Allen is the right-wing guy, but that was obviously totally false. Newsom should win this by at least 20 points, if not 30.

It's really weird, because I thought Cox would be the more moderate one too. He went hard right though and sucked the wind out of Allen's sails.
