Virginia governors are not allowed to serve consecutive terms. They are barred from immediate re-election. However, a former governor is permitted to run for a second term in a future election. Regardless of how you vote, who runs as a centrist/moderate?

Primary fight between Fairfax and Herring, probably with Fairfax winning. If Herring really wanted to be governor he would have run against Northam in 2017, who I see as a less inspiring opponent than Fairfax.

I am unsure how much of a political future Perriello has. He hasn't held any elected office since 2011; that's a decade if he doesn't win any election between now and 2021. He was unknown to a lot of the state when he ran in last year's primary, and that problem gets worse for him each year. Unless Northam does something really bad to alienate the base (e.g., if he has made zero progress on Medicaid expansion), I don't see any way that Perriello can get enough energy to run an anti-Northam campaign that undercuts support from anyone in the administration. And I say this as someone who voted for Perriello in 2017's primary.

Keep in mind this race could be upended by Mark Warner if he vacates his seat for any reason in 2020. Possible that a potential Senate opening could attract any of the Fairfax-Herring-Perriello trio.

Warner will absolutely run for re-election in 2020. You can quote me on that one.

Fairfax will definitely run. Tom Perriello may also run again, but the results will probably be similar to the 2017 primary. It depends also a lot on who's president in 2021.

It'll be Fairfax because it's a state that love electing centrist corporate sellout Democrats but I want it to be Perriello.

Fairfax is awesome, I hope he's a future Senator or Governor (or President or VP but that's a bit further down the road). He'll probably run in 2021.

I could see Herring beating Perriello in 2021, while Fairfax runs for AG in 2021 then for governor in 2025 (when he'll be in his mid-40s).

Don't see how Perriello could win against Fairfax. Fairfax is just as progressive as him.
