To contrast with the other poll - who do you think is the kindest of these presidents? I'd probably go with Carter.

Carter? LOL.

I mean, it's clearly the man whose cabinet hated that he kept on pardoning every civil war deserter whose clemency plea came across his desk.

If I had included a fifth option, it would definitely have been him.

WI: Gerald Ford, whose kind words and his fight against alcoholic abuse were amazing.

Lincoln neglected his wife's psychological suffering, Eisenhower was a military man which necessarily implies a certain roughness, and Obama is far too savvy and self-aware. Probably Carter.

And just what's wrong with that statement?

Are you suggesting that there can be kind presidents that get things done? Or do you dispute the niceness of Carter? Or Both?

I think Carter's niceness/humbleness is ridiculously overstated.  My hypotheses are that 1) liberals are mad that he ushered in Reagan and the ensuing era, so they try to legitimize him in a historical context and 2) the fact that he is so often viewed as such an incompetent President is "explained away" by him being a nice guy who wasn't cut out for Washington, rather than just ... well, a bad President.

EDIT: I also think there's a small-but-non-negligible group of conservative Southerners who very much prefer to think of their grandparents as being as conservative as they were (the old "I didn't leave the Democratic Party, it left me" bullshlt), and in order to come to terms with the fact that their family voted for a liberal Democrat who just happened to have the same accent as they did, they manufacture a fondness for Carter as some type of "different Democrat."

Uncle Abe or Carter.

Overall likely Ford, whose nickname was "Mr. Nice Guy".

I agree with both sentiments..

I voted for Lincoln as someone who likes great Presidents in general.
