Hahaha no. He's WAY closer to McConnell than he is to Schumer on most issues.

I am not trolling. I know he is nothing like Schumer. He is closer to McConnell, but he could fit in as a Blue Dog Democrat who wants to repeal the Affordable Care Act. His relationship with Trump is rocky. In 2001, he considered leaving the GOP. Look at this here: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/24/us/politics/24mccain.html

McCain is a partisan Republican. I endorsed Kirkpatrick for a reason.

2001 was a while ago, he was closer to the center and more mavericky then. Also, it was before Jeffords switched, and Democrats wanted a majority. Now, if he did it, he'd go from the majority to the minority, burn many bridges, have trouble finding a new home, and he really doesn't fit in with the Democrats, especially not in an era this polarized.

What indication was ever given that he was going to switch parties? Lisa Murkowski is much more likely to switch parties, and I don't even see that happening.

Murkowski never considered switching. McCain actually considered switching parties in 2001 and has a strained relationship with Donald Trump. It says McCain once considered switching here: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/24/us/politics/24mccain.html

The parties have moved even further apart since then.

At this point, I don't see how anyone can credibly switch parties in this environment. If you are a Democrat, you are automatically too far to the left for the Republican Party. If you are a Republican, you are automatically too far to the right for the Democratic Party.

The guy who just campaigned on reflexively opposing all of Hillary Clinton's SCOTUS nominees ain't switching.

What if Collins and Portman both switch, or Collins switches and Foster Campbell wins. That would give Democrats a majority , breaking a 50-50 split. What is the possibility of that?

Back off guys, it's a spambot/troll/sock.
I was just interested in observing different scenarios with GOP senators who don't see eye to eye with Trump.

No, he will not become a Republican. Joe Manchin has more in common with McCain.

Manchin and Collins are the only two Senators who I could see switching parties, but they are very unlikely to do so.

Are you a progressive Democrat? I'm a center-right libertarian independent. He did not switch parties yet. If he were considered a "real" conservative by the tea party, he would not have faced tea party challengers in 2016.

If he does bolt the GOP, he'll be an independent.

As an independent, would he caucus with the Democrats, Republicans, or be a crossbencher?

He'd still caucus with the GOP.

The consensus is that McCain will remain a Republican although two said he will become an independent, and two others said he will become a Democrat. I still think he will become a Democrat.
