"Hegemony means we do whatever we want 100% of the time no matter what our allies think" is such a childish understanding of foreign affairs.

The WTO ruling against us when we put tarrifs on China is not beneficial to our interests one bit, nor is what the ICC has tried to do either.

The political establishment of both parties agree on this point as well which is why they are for defying the WTO, sanctioning the ICC because they understand that post cold war liberal internationalism has failed and the cold war version of it worked.

A lot of the time America on the international stage comes off like a manchild who's never been able to grow up emotionally because he never had an authority figure to tell him "no". The saddest part in all this is seeing supposedly serious foreign policy talking heads who are constantly trying to rationalize this arrested development and give it fancy names that make it sound like a coherent ideology.

While I support US hegemony, it is more a means to an end -realizing President Woodrow Wilson's vision (whatever his faults personally as a southern racist, he was right on this) by eventually creating a world safe for freedom and democracy.  And I trust no other world power to do this.  Liberal internationalism creates the conditions needed for that world to come to fruition.

Well, considering tariffs are a tax on consumers, it actually is in our best interest lmao.

There would have to be a profound shift in American culture and government for there to be a different approach to managing global affairs than liberal internationalism (other than opting out of the international system entirely, which America has done for most of its history). America is a society literally founded on belief in democracy and resistance to colonial oppression.  That system does not come without its problems, but it’s hard to imagine the world being as rich and at peace for as long as it has been under a different global hegemon.

So should we have not had trade restrictions on the USSR during the cold war
