The primary season was an interesting one. President King faced a strong primary challenge from Senator Harry Byrd, Jr. Byrd lost the Democratic nomination, yet received about a third of the vote, he split off and re-ignited a "last stand" of the States Rights' Democratic Party. Senator Barry Goldwater, who was the 1952 Republican Nominee decided to run again, facing stuff opposition from Michigan Governor George Romney, who narrowly lost. Goldwater has criticized King of attempting to start another Civil War, yet Goldwater does not support segregation. King is running on his experience, and sending potential troops to Vietnam. This will be an interesting election.

The U.S Presidential Election of 1968:



President Martin Luther King, Jr./Vice President Robert Kennedy: 355 Electoral Votes 50.0%
Senator Barry Goldwater/Representative Pete McCloskey: 118 Electoral Votes 40.0%
Senator Harry F. Byrd, Jr./Representative John Rarick: 65 Electoral Votes 10.0%

The U.S Presidential Election of 1968 was different than any other elections, it included the first televised presidential debate, in which King seemed more civil, with being criticized by Goldwater and Byrd, Jr. just because he was black, they used several racial slurs and all of America was watching, and he denounced them civilly, acting presidential. This led King, Jr. to crush both Goldwater and Byrd in the General Election. Segregation was to be killed.
