I hope Americans from diverse racial, ethnic and religious backgrounds, from the steel mills of the Rust Belt, to the shores of the Pacific Ocean, come together to proclaim with one voice, "Shut your god-damn mouth Starbucks.  Nobody asked you.  Just give us our god-damn sugary coffee flavored, whip cream topped drink-thing, and leave us the hell alone."

Gives the impression that Starbucks is some kind of European coffee salon (which it isn't), that the history of race in America is something that could be discussed like a weekend getaway or some Netflix show (which it isn't) and that a corporation can nudge people toward diversity like they can nudge them toward buying raisin bran over corn flakes (which it can't).

Not to mention that a Starbucks employee having to entangle herself in an argument will kill order processing speed during rush hour. How did no other department in Starbucks veto this? It reflects most negatively on the company's corporate governance more than anything.

I don't really see what this has to do with "neoliberalism" but obviously it's dumb.

Ah yes, Starbucks is playing that Moderate Hero/Very Serious Person tune again...same one they played when they had mugs in 2013 reading "Come Together"...or something like that.

Amazingly pathetic and stupid really.

This.

Also, this is going to end in Starbucks brawls when someone says something a bit too controversial around the wrong person. Because making caffeine-deprived individuals talk race is going to end well!

That was an altogether worthless fluff piece. Would make me think of not going to Starbucks, except I already don't.

Personally I think this started from a good place, but they didn't execute it too well.  Still, slight FF.

I literally can't imagine anyone thinking this was a good idea.  Like, not even the PR flacks who are paid to think so.

Can we please have Charles Murray or someone like that get a PT job as a barista? That would be hysterical.

I'm surprised that Starbucks has a campaign to promote The Amazing Race.

Well folks, I think we've officially hit peak neoliberalism

sit in a room and tell black people your innermost thoughts about them, sponsored by Starbucks and America's somehow-most-widely-circulated newspaper, USA Today.  you may even get one or both products for free!  supplies limited.  not valid where prohibited by law.  cash value 1/20 of a cent.
